Shasta: A new face at Whatcom

The Northwest Community College Initiative at Whatcom Communty College is welcoming a new staff member for coming quarters. She is an active community member and enjoys exploring the outdoors, traveling and learning new languages. We are sure the program and students will benefit greatly from her worldly expertise!

Shasta Mt Denali

Hello! My name is Shasta Pettijohn. I moved to Bellingham from Eastern Washington in 2011 because I wanted to be closer to the ocean, and I love the Cascade Mountains. In June 2015 I completed my Master’s degree in Adult & Higher Education at WWU, and I will finish my TESOL certificate this winter. I was hired at WCC in December 2015 and I will be helping NWCCI advisor Iris Anthony a couple days a week.

I enjoy playing guitar and singing folk, blues, bluegrass and classic rock music. My fiancée Jeff and I own a 36 foot sail boat and we love sailing around the San Juan Islands. We also like downhill skiing, camping, fishing, and traveling. In 2012 we visited Iceland, England and France, and I spent one month in Queretaro, Mexico in 2014 learning Spanish and teaching ESL.

I am looking forward to getting to know the students in the NWCCI program, and helping them achieve their educational and career goals. I love learning about other cultures. I believe that understanding others builds bridges and connections between people. I enjoy sharing what I love about the Pacific Northwest. I am excited to learn more about everyone’s cultures and countries, and discover what they are learning about American culture through their classes at WCC and their the experiences of the many activities and events in the Bellingham area.
