Two current Northwest Community College Initiative (NWCCI) students – Anish from India and Valentino Bangun from Indonesia – along with NWCCI alumni, Dwi Kristiani from Indonesia (2011-2012) have art and photos featured in this year’s edition of the SLAM, the student literary and arts magazine at Pierce College. Last week, they attended a reception at Pierce College recognizing their achievement.
SLAM is an annual publication devoted to showcasing the best in student poetry, prose, drama, artwork, and photography. SLAM, which enjoys a robust press run of 3,500 copies, is free to the public and available at various campus locations. The magazine accepts only the best poetry, prose, drama and visual art created by Pierce College students. Submissions are accepted year-round and reviewed in the winter and spring by an editorial board, which includes students, faculty and staff.
“I am quite happy that my photo was published in Pierce College’s SLAM magazine. My photo is a repetition of colorful doors I took in Portland. I liked the contrast between doors. I felt very happy that SLAM chose my work. It’s gave me motivation to work hard. My friends and American families have also appreciated my work, so it’s giving me more motivation to achieve my goal. Right now my focus is on portraits, outdoor modeling and head shots. I am really thankful to the Department of State and Pierce College for giving me such a wonderful platform,” Anish says.
